The calendar has flipped to November. A few flakes of snow are in the air. And out at Bedard Park in St-Lazare on Monday are four warmly dressed municipal workers putting up the boards for the outdoor skating rink. The NHL might still be on lockout, but there will be hockey.

What is it about an outdoor rink that is so special?

Anyone who has ever taken that leap of faith and built a backyard rink has felt it. Anyone who has put on their skates and cleared the snow off a municipal rink knows. Once you are out there, it’s difficult to call it quits.
