One of the best things about living in the Off Island is the people. What a wonderful, fascinating and varied bunch.
Let me introduce you to one: Catherine Hogan. She is a 39-year-old mother of two who lives in Hudson.
In her professional life she’s a Grade 11 English teacher at Lindsay Place High School in Pointe Claire.
But you should see what she has done in her spare time recently. Really. Last December, she made a video with the help of one of her former students, who was also a student-teacher at Lindsay last fall. It was originally aimed at students at her school. It contains a powerful, yet simple message: Teachers care. But it is quickly finding a bigger audience.
Hogan’s goal is to reach out to students who might be struggling with any one of many issues teenagers face. Her hope is to let them know that teachers care and can help. She realizes, however, to get that message out there, there has to be a connection. She attempts to make that connection by sharing her story of what happened to her when she was a teenager.
If you have an extra five minutes today and want to be inspired, I would like to suggest you watch a video. It is only four minutes long.
And then, feel good about the fact you have people like Hogan in your neighbourhood.
