Hudson

Time to make our list and check it twice

With Santa Claus in Montreal last weekend for the big parade, and heading to Hudson on December 2 for our parade, it’s clearly time to write our Letters to Santa.

But what to ask for?

I suppose we could try and impress our friends and neighbors by putting “world peace” on our lists—but I doubt anyone could do that at the moment, even Santa.

We could go with philanthropy, and ask him to give a gift to our favorite charity or cause. Which would be admirable—but not what I’m talking about here.

The letters to Santa I’m talking about are the old-fashioned kind. The ones containing a list of things we desire backed up by testimonials assuring adequate amounts of good behavior in return.

My letter this year would likely ask for a gift certificate for Ladies Day at Steve’s Car Wash where the filth of my automobile could be chiseled clean by the professionals now required by such a long-overdue event. I might also ask for a nice tarp for my kayak. Or anything to do with the management of snow tires, an activity I loathe with unreasoning passion.

My mother’s letter to Santa would no doubt request a remote control she could understand, a proper job like accountancy for her daughter, and clip-on earrings that actually stay on so she wouldn’t have to buy two pairs of the same model every time.

I imagine the letter to Santa from my dog would include a simple list: a bone to chew, a squirrel to chase, and a supply of cheap, juicy canned dog food instead of that dry, dentally healthy, vet-recommended stuff that costs a fortune.

My town’s letter to Santa might ask for another daily train or two, and the magic formula of what is needed to keep Hudson’s fledgling commercial recovery alive. And while my province’s letter might ask for extra doctors, and my country for recognition that it ran a pretty fiscally responsible ship as compared to its neighbor to the south, one thing is certain: every letter will be asking Santa for hockey this year.

But time is running out with only 12 days until Santa’s visit to Hudson’s parade, and 34 days until Christmas Day. Naughty or nice, it’s time those letters were written.

What would be in your letter to Santa this year?
