Just over a month after it opened, Highway 30, the new route to bypass the Island of Montreal will be closed for repairs over the next two nights.

A press release issued by the highway authority said the Highway 40 East access ramp from Highway 30 North in Vaudreuil-Dorion will be closed, as will the 30 South access ramp from Highway 40 westbound on Wednesday and Thursday nights starting at 8 p.m. and ending at 6 the following morning.

The highway will also have lane closures throughout the Vaudreuil-Dorion and Rousillon sectors on both nights.

Denis Léonard, the general manager of A30 Express explained the work being done was regular maintenance on older parts of the highway, not the new extension between Vaudreuil-Dorion and Chateauguay. However, he said there would be some closures on the newer section  throughout the year, both for regular maintenance and to finalize work on the extension. The highway authority has until September of this year to complete its work.

Contrary to the impression given in the article, this doesn’t have anything to do with the new bit of Highway 30 that opened a month ago. These closures, as described, are for access to Highway 40, at the northwest end of what is now part of Highway 30 but used to be the 540, a part of roadway that’s been there for more than 40 years. Not all of what is now called Highway 30 is brand new!

I am aware that section of the road is not new. However, it is managed by the new A30 Express, the company that built and manages the highway extension. This company assured reporters last month the highway was fully completed, and no other closures were necessary. There are also new sections of the highway affected.
