What was that boom? Off-Islanders hear loud explosion-like sound

What was that boom?

Hudson and St-Lazare were rocked briefly by the sound of an explosion around 8 p.m. Tuesday, but the source of the big boom remains a mystery.

Officials in the Off-Island towns, as well as the Surêté du Québec, were flummoxed, leaving residents who heard the noise to wonder on Twitter what happened.

St-Lazare Mayor Robert Grimaudo could not confirm the source of the noise, but added he is hearing that many residents are reporting they have heard something.

“No one seems to know what it is exactly but a friend described it as bright blue flash in the sky followed by the sound,” wrote Kalina Laframboise.

“Felt like an explosion, or a ‘short’ earthquake,” commented Faith MacLeod on Off Island Gazette’s Facebook page. “Stepped outside and neighbours were out wondering what it was.”

“Yes, was sitting watching TV and I thought one of my kids fell out of bed. It was super loud,” added Jenn Ryan Baluyot on Off Island Gazette’s Facebook page.

Residents from Pincourt to Pointe Claire and Pierrefonds to Dollard-des-Ormeaux are reporting hearing the explosion-like sound.

“Heard it in Hudson,” commented Lina Simone. “The dog went running to the basement.”

Baie-d’Urfe resident Marie Forest Filippelli reported something as well.

“We heard it, and felt it,” said Nancy Lannon-Doyle of St-Lazare. “My entire house shook.”

“It’s been heard all of the region but no details,” wrote Greg Patterson. “My opinion is that it was a meteor hitting the atmosphere with sonic boom.”

my bad! tried to download the entire internet and my modem exploded

seriously though, heard it in chateauguay. didnt see a flash but it sounded like a pumpkin hitting the side of my house

  2. We heard it in Chomedey West, Laval, I’m pretty sure it was an asteroid exploding over Quebec somewhere, now that Irene said she saw two flashes in the air???

  3. Heard a loud rumble and a quick shake. My dog immediately started to growl. My son was talking with his friend on the phone and 3 seconds prior to me asking my kids if they heard the noise, his friend had felt and heard the same thing we did. I live in L’Ile-Bizard and his friend lives in Beaconsfield.

  4. Heard a loud explosion, house shook and there was a flash of light. We thought it was a natural gas expolsion or a propane explosion. No sirens but we remained nervous as we saw nothing, Would be nice if we at least knew what happened.Grateful it was none of the above and that no one was hurt.

  5. My husband and I were outside. We saw the blue light. I thought it might have been a transformer that blew. Then the nose came about 5 minutes later or more. Hummm!!

  6. Heard it here in Pincourt, thought something hit the side of my home, sound was on the west side wall, thought it was my neighbor! Didn’t seem the bang was everywhere, just the west side, strange??! Very strange! :o

  7. Get ready it is only starting ,it will get worst.. Every body saw what happen in the Philippines and in around the word, you are nor exempt of the Bible

Heard it in vaudreuil I was putting kids to Ned they heard it too, sounded like one if my shelving in my garage would had fell down or someone jumping on roof, it was hard to explain the kids that’s for sure…

  9. We heard the loud boom in St-Lazare. It was so loud I first thought a tree had fallen and hit the house. The fireworks plant was my second thought.

  10. I saw it in brockville ontario, but didn’t hear it. I was in a car with the music on, everyone in the car saw it, the sky lit up for a second, but it was snowing steadily, so it stuck out as uncharacteristic of lightening.

  11. In Vaudreuil-Dorion/Hudson area. We heard the boom followed by the house shaking. Felt like a blast at a quarry but no quarry’s around!

  12. happened to be looking out window at the time, there was a flash of light, the back lawn lit up, blinked my eyes, thought…. hell I really do need new eye glasses :)

  16. From Hudson: Caught the ‘flash’ out of the corner of my eye (thought it was car lights) then heard the boom (the house rattled). Thought a tree had come down onto the house. Thought it was too short to be an earthquake. Anxious to find out what it was….
