The old St-Charles overpass over Highway 40 in Vaudreuil-Dorion was demolished Saturday night.
The structure, which is being replaced with a new wider overpass, was destroyed by work crews between 10:30 p.m. and shortly after midnight on Sunday morning.
Heavy machinery – mechanical shovels and jackhammers – attacked the concrete span that straddles the highway along its length, turning it into piles of rubble.
The event attracted a small audience of spectators.
The highway was completely closed to traffic from Exit 3 on Highway 30 and Exit 35 on Highway 40. Vehicles were rerouted around the area via De la Gare Blvd. and part of Cité des Jeunes Blvd.
